One of my favourite cities in Europe and the World. Madrid may lack the grandesque architecture of Paris, Rome or even nearby Barcelona, however it is here where one finds the beating heart of Spain and Spanish culture enriched by cultural diversity spanning the old and the new world (and its former Spanish colonies). From Puerta del Sol and Gran Via, to Bario de La Latina, Lavapiés, Parque del Buen Retiro and magnificent Casa de Campo.
Just outside of Madrid is Spain’s medieval capital city-fortress of Toledo.
…To go to bed at night in Madrid marks you as a little queer. For a long time your friends will be a little uncomfortable about it. Nobody goes to bed in Madrid until they have killed the night. Appointments with a friend are habitually made for after midnight at the cafe.
Its street life, the buzzing night life of the city and its thousands of tapas bars; the unbearable summer heat wave, enchanting historic architecture spanning centuries of styles and influences, the narrow streets leading to Plaza Mayor. Madrid is simply unforgettable and everyone I know who’s once visited the city always returns.
